NFCA's president Steve Rukavina had an interesting lunch near UN headquarters with BiH Ambassador

There were three initial earthquakes, all at 6:24 am (local time). The epicenter was 4.3 miles north of
Zagreb in the Medvednica mountain range. They had a magnitude of 5.4 on the Richter scale with a depth
of 6 miles. The next earthquake occurred at 7:01 am, it was a 4.8. The historical city center of Zagreb
shook the most. Many buildings cracked in Zagreb and walls and rooftops were damaged - 1,900 are
uninhabitable. They were followed by a string of 74 lower magnitude tremors over the next 42 hours.
These occurred during the middle of the coronavirus pandemic. More than 7,000 buildings are reported to
have been damage. This was the largest earthquake in Croatia since the Great Zagreb Earthquake in 1880,
a 6.3 on the Richter scale - March 22, 2020.

Steve brought in both current Ambassadors, US ambassador Robert Kohorst and Croatian amb to the USA
Pjer Simunovic. Senator Mark Begich gave an informative talk. Amb Kohorst says: 1) When he came to
Croatia 30 months ago, he was told that his #1 objective was to build the LNG terminal on Krk island.
For providing energy, this is not a for profit project. First load of gas to be downloaded in Jan 2021.
2) He likes hearing and feeling our enthusiasm for Croatia. 3) Croatia is a valued U.S. partner.
4) The US Treasury Dept now has Croatia on the list to negotiate a treaty that avoids double taxation.
However there are 200 other countries on this list. 5) Everyone wants to visit Croatia.
6) Tourism should be down 70% in 2020. Senator Begich says: Alaska depends on tourism and selling oil,
and with COVID-19, they took a triple hit. The pandemic caused everyone to re-examine things and that
could lead to some good things. Example: should the
Alaskan 800 mile long $43 billion Natural gas pipeline rely on steel from unstable/unfriendly countries.
Amb Pjer Simunovic said: When dealing with the pandemic and economy recovery, we need to look at the world as one.
The NFCA embraced the opportunity to attract new people to attend the NFCA conference's Public
session Saturday afternoon by Zoom and finding out what we are all about. The public session had a bigger audience
than usual (55 people). We all definitely saved a bunch of time and money from not traveling and not
paying for hotel rooms. Regular Croatian Americans just like to save their time and money for a trip to
Croatia rather than go out of state for another Croatian meeting. Will there be more Zoom meetings in the
future even after the pandemic is over? Don't wait until next June until we see you again - June 6, 2020
